Grammarly is an online grammar checker. It claims to correct over 250 grammatical mistakes. It can also catch spelling errors and suggest alternative words. Here is what it claims to be able to do in their own words from their website:
- Checks for correct use of advanced grammar rules
“Grammarly scans your text for proper use of more than 250 advanced grammar rules, spanning everything from subject-verb agreement to article use to modifier placement.”
- Contextual spellchecker
“Correctly spelled words used in the wrong context mean embarrassing mistakes for you. Grammarly spots erroneous use of lose/loose, affect/effect, lie/lay, there/their/they’re and many more commonly confused words.”
- Vocabulary enhancement
“Words can make an impact, or they can fall flat. Enhance your sentences with Grammarly’s word choice suggestions that optimize for the context of your document. Readability and meaning are improved instantly.”
Here is how it works: you register on grammarly.com for a free account and when you have access to the site, input the text that you want Grammarly to check. Give it a few seconds and it comes back with some pretty useful feedback on the writing you submitted. The free account is quite limited so to make best use of what grammarly.com has to offer you would need to upgrade to a paid account.
Do also check out their grammar handbook. Study and use it diligently and it can be helpful in evaluating your writing yourself without depending upon a computer program to do it. The added advantage will be that you will actually also understand what makes for a more grammatically accurate writing.
The various points they cover in the handbook can be quite useful especially for intermediate and advanced students in their preparation for the IELTS test. You can access it at the following link: Grammarly Handbook | English Grammar Rules.
